In 2008, we turned over our general daylily listings to our sister nursery, Southern Skies Gardens. Doug and Becky Holder will continue the tradition of providing the high quality daylilies and customer service that you have come to know with us. Please visit their website at www.southernskiesgarden.com.  We will continue to hybridize and offer our introductions.

In our hybridizing programs and lines we strive for a whole plant. Without plant habit; good scapes, branching, high bud count, hardiness, and good looking foliage, we feel that the flower is diminished and secondary in achieving our goals. We keep all of these things in mind when selecting in the seedling field, not simply selecting for a pretty face. It has been a long painful process that has lead us to the lines that now contain many of the traits we so strongly desire. We don’t believe for a minute that you can’t have a great flower on a great plant, they’re just not easy to come by. It has taken discipline and years of work to accomplish our goals. Dormancy and rebloom are also very high on our list of desirable traits, which should be obvious from our new and previous introductions. We hope that you will appreciate all of the years of hard work, the many hundreds of thousands of rejected seedlings, and all that it takes to make our humble offerings to you; ones that we are very proud of.

We also do a lot of work with doubles. We realize that many people don’t like the double form and that doesn’t hurt our feelings, there are some things we don’t like, and hope it doesn’t hurt yours. With that said, we think that what most people really don’t like is the inconsistent form, or the form not correctly matching the flower. We have heard many of our friends and customers say that they didn’t like doubles until they saw ours. We work very hard on consistent form, day after day. It’s taken us several generations to work out the flaws but we hope you enjoy the results of our work.

We attribute our overall success to the kindness and thoughtfulness of others. It’s obvious to us that our best form of advertising is word–of–mouth. To all of you who have told your friends and family about us, and have placed repeat orders, thanks! We treat our customers as our friends and as we would want to be treated, in fact we guarantee it.

We gladly invite visitors to view our gardens or just to visit. During the season, Labor Day to Memorial Day, we will try to be open at least part of the day every day. A call ahead is appreciated so that we can be sure to be here for you and your friends. We hope that if you are in our area, you will have time to stop by. Our peak bloom is typically around the end of June, give or take a couple of weeks.

We have learned that the greatest compliment in daylilies is to have another enthusiast buy one of our own introductions. To those of you who have supported us in this way, please know that we are extremely flattered, and thanks again!

For those of you who are concerned about the hardiness of our plants, please don’t be. We have found that the designation of foliage habit (e.g., Ev, Semi–ev, or Dor) to be a poor indicator of plant survivability and performance. All of our plants are 100% field grown right here in USDA Zone 6B. We don’t baby our plants with mulch or any other measure to help them survive. Our winters are quite rough with highly variable temperatures, usually without snow cover. We line–out our plants during the hottest time of the year when temperatures are typically in the mid to upper 90’s. We feel that these are some of the toughest growing conditions anywhere, and make for a good trial for any region. If we are aware of a hardiness problem in your growing zone, we will notify you of the condition before we ship your order. We sincerely hope that you have a wonderful daylily season full of beautiful blooms and the excitement of many new great plants.

Best wishes,j_j-signature02
